The Anonymous Canon

About

The Anonymous Canon is a reference directory of works published anonymously or under unresolved bylines, from the oldest literature in the world to contemporary publishing.

Each entry records the work's original byline, its authorship status (revealed, pseudonym known, disputed, or unknown), the documented attribution with source and reveal story where one exists, its copyright status, and, for public domain works, links to free full texts at Project Gutenberg and the Internet Archive. The whole dataset is published as an open JSON API.

The site has two rules that shape everything on it. First, no fabrication: what is unknown is labeled unknown, and what is disputed is labeled disputed. Second, no deanonymization: authors who are anonymous today by choice stay that way here. The long versions are themethodology and theeditorial standards.

The Anonymous Canon is an independent project, operated by Kinetic Gain. Data sources are credited on the attribution page. Some outbound bookshop links are affiliate links, disclosed at/disclosure.
