The Anonymous Canon

Why authors write anonymously

This directory assigns a reason for anonymity only when a source states one, which is why most entries honestly read "unrecorded." But where the record speaks, it names a small set of motives that recur for five centuries.

Political risk

The oldest documented motive and the clearest. Common Sense argued sedition and appeared as the work of "an Englishman"; the pasquinades mocked popes from the safety of a statue; Theophrastus redivivus, the boldest atheist text of its century, was never printed at all; and the modern security state produces its own version, with Michael Scheuer's books credited to Anonymous by CIA rule. The 6 works with this documented reason are collected under political risk.

Propriety

Victorian erotica was a literature engineered to be authorless: false imprints like Pierre Marteau, anonymous four volume productions like The Romance of Lust, and attributions that remain disputed precisely because nobody could sign. See propriety.

Religion and the anonymous-by-default past

The largest bloc of anonymous literature has no individual motive at all. Egyptian funerary books, Sumerian laments, and the I Ching come from cultures where sacred text was institutional and unsigned. Calling these works anonymous is true but anachronistic, and their entries say so. Seereligious.

Gender

The record ties several anonymities to the market's treatment of women, from Hannah More's campaign tracts to the convention that let Elizabeth von Arnim build a career as "the author of Elizabeth and Her German Garden." Where the tie is documented it is recorded under gender; where it is only likely, it is not.

Satire and marketing

Satire hides to survive its targets. Marketing hides to sell: Go Ask Alice manufactured authenticity with the byline Anonymous, the diary novels that followed it made the device a genre, and O: A Presidential Novel turned the guessing game itself into the launch campaign. Seesatire and marketing.

The reason this site will not list

Some authors are anonymous now, on purpose, and their reasons are their own. This directory reports that state and does not investigate it. The full policy is in the editorial standards.
